When you think of Sonoma Valley the first thing that usually comes to mind is wine and for good reason. This Northern California wine region is home to over fifty wineries and thousands of acres of scenic vineyards.
While I highly recommend experiencing as many wineries as you please during your visit, I also suggest tasting the other regional foods that Sonoma Valley has to offer.
Figone’s Olive Oil Company, located in the scenic town of Kenwood, is well-known in Sonoma Valley for their fragrant and flavorful extra virgin olive oils, pressed from olives grown on their property of over 4000 trees. They also handcraft a variety of balsamic vinegars made in the traditional Modena style.
Visit the Figone’s of California Olive Oil Company to taste their variety of olive oils and vinegars. Let the helpful staff lead you though the tasting. They will teach you the optimal way to taste olive oils and vinegars. There is a method!
Once you’re finished picking out your favorite olive oils and balsamic vinegars, take a look around their gift shop. It’s the ideal place to pick up presents for your friends and family back home. Olive oils and vinegars make great gifts. Handmade scented olive oil soaps, Italian pottery, and lotions are available for purchase, too. There are plenty of gifts in the Figone’s tasting room to choose from.
You might be hungry after your olive oil and vinegar tasting. Why not indulge in fresh homemade mozzarella made by owner, Frank Figone himself? Frank demonstrates how his grandmother taught him how to make mozzarella with a step-by-step process that results in some fantastic tasting cheese.
Frank makes about a dozen balls of mozzarella during each demonstration that are available for purchase to take home or as part of a delicious Italian dish with tomatoes, basil, proscuitto and grilled bread. I suggest doing both!
Want even more fantastic Italian food? Order up some grilled romaine with Caesar dressing, a lamb, beef or chicken kabob or any number of sandwiches made with homemade flatbread from Cibo di Strada, an Italian street food company that operates adjacent to Figone’s Olive Oil Company.
There really is more to taste in the wine country than wine. Try something different next time you come to Sonoma Valley and visit Figone’s Olive Oil Company. They are open seven days a week, located at 9580 Sonoma Highway in Kenwood, California and can be reached at (707) 282 – 9092.
