BaselWorld in Switzerland
Perhaps the largest event in watchmaking, BaselWorld, is underway (March 27-April3) in the town of Messe Basel, Switzerland. BaselWorld brings together the finest manufacturers of timepieces in the world as they showcase their newest pieces and technology. The event creates a lot of media buzz, but, interestingly, is also open to the public. All the renowned names of the watchmaking industry you would expect- Hublot, Bvlgari, Chopard, Breitling, Rolex- are in attendance showcasing some amazing new pieces that will be released to the public over the coming year. BaselWorld serves as not only a platform to showcase, but also creates an atmosphere that inspires all the watch lovers in attendance. Cast your eyes on some of the beautiful, new watches being debuted at BaselWorld 2014 as well as some of my personal favorites: Breitling Navitimer GMT Breitling created the first version of the Navitimer in 1952 as a “wrist instrument” designed for pilots and other aviation professionals. This chronograph, which has a circular slide rule, became the “it” object among aeronautical enthusiasts. The new Navitimer is shown in a 48mm case and is powered by Breitling Clibre B04 .The watch is made for the world traveler with a dual timezone system that is simply activated by pulling out the crown and turning it backwards or forwards in one-hour increments. Chopard L.U.C. 1937 Classic The House released a limited edition L.U.C. 1937 model in 2010 for its 150th anniversary, paying tribute to the horological heritage of the brand. This timepiece, simple and classic, is a timeless version that returns in 18k rose gold with a satin-brushed silver-tone dial. The case has been subtly redesigned and refined while still staying true to the original spirit. The inside features the Chopard Manufacture L.U.C. 01.01-L calibre. Available with hand-sewn alligator strap or metal bracelet.Hublot Spirit of Big Bang
Hublot has become renowned for its sporty, eye catching timepieces and this watch is no exception. The tonneau case is pure Hublot, but in a new way that allows for the mixing of materials and colors. Inside the exquisite case is a high-frequency, skeleton chronograph movement which is also a new feature. Case available in titanium and ceramic or 18k King Gold and ceramic.
Bvlgari Octo Velocissimo
This piece from Italian master, Bvlgari, is a work of art dedicated to strong personalities. The design is rooted in octagonal lines with three counters arranged in a V-shape that create a visual balance. The movement of this watch matches the strong, bold exterior design, beating at 36,000 vib/h, resulting in exceptional precision. Available with an alligator strap or steel bracelet.
Tissot T-Touch Expert Solar
Tissot started creating tactile watches in 1999, and the brand is reasserting its expertise in this sector by unveiling the first tactile watch to be powered by solar energy. Light rays hitting the dial charge the watch as well as illuminate the hour-markers and hands. Useful functions on the timepiece include a perceptual calendar, alarm, second time zone, barometer, altimeter, chronograph, logbook, compass, regatta countdown, and backlight.
Just based on these few timepieces, which are a drop in the bucket when looking at all the pieces at BaselWorld, the horology has a lot to look forward to over the coming year as well as all the exciting pieces that will be available for consumer purchase.
