For Men: Contemporary and Classic Seasonal Outerwear

Contemporary and Classic Seasonal Outerwear for men

When it comes to selecting appropriate outerwear for the season, there are a myriad of choices from pea coats, trenches, and vests to officer’s jackets. This season, I recommend trying a new contemporary style as well as a classic style that can never steer you in the wrong direction. When selecting outerwear, look at the fabric, weight, and durability as well as functionality. These will be pieces you were for 4-6 months out of the year depending on your region.

Orvis, purveyors of distinctive country lifestyle, offer an array of outerwear selection that is stylish yet functional. With their heritage in outdoor outfitting, Orvis’s products are crafted with high quality. This season, try a performance blazer for a contemporary piece and a barn coat for a classic style perfect for any situation or setting.

The Performance Blazer:

I love this new style of outwear because it is perfect for the man on the go or the man about town that wants functionality and ease of wear while still remaining stylish. The performance blazer’s main purpose is to eliminate the need for a blazer and an overcoat together, just wear the blazer! The blazer is filled with duck down, providing warmth and features tailoring to provide style.

The detailing of a blazer and function of outerwear works so well in my opinion. This is perfect for running around the city on a chilly weekend, to the office, or running errands in the suburbs. It pairs and wears very well over a cashmere sweater. The layering aspect makes it ideal for fall and winter. I paired it with a cashmere cable knit sweater and khaki denim for an easy weekend look. The performance blazer will be sure to add an updated take on a classic to your wardrobe this season.

The Barn Coat:

The barn coat is the epitome of classic, country style, and I just love the ease of wear and versatility it embodies. The style has an air of casualness yet can be worn to both the office and on the weekend. For me, the barn coat is reminiscent of chilly fall weekends walking the fields in the country.

The corduroy collar and broken-in ease of wear are signature of the classic barn coat. This will easily become your go-to jacket as you run out the door. The red plaid lining adds a touch of interest and also a touch of warmth. The pockets make the jacket highly versatile as well. I paired this classic coat with a button down oxford in a blue university stripe and navy chinos for a quintessentially preppy look. The barn coat will last season after season as a go-to piece of outerwear.

How is the fit on the orvis barn coat? I am a rather slim 5’11 and afraid that the medium might be to large? How is the fit for you? Overly big or just right?

Miller- I would say that the barn coat does run slightly large, however, that is inherent in the style of the jacket. I was wearing a medium which is generally for a 38-40 jacket size and I gravitate towards 38 on this spectrum. Hope this is helpful!
