Having trouble finding the right outfit to wear your casual holiday parties this season?
Does spending a sleigh full of money on a fussy uncomfortable dress you’ll only wear once leave you feeling cold?
Afraid you’ll give up in exasperation and end up watching A Christmas Carol on the sofa in your sugar plum fairy pajamas while nibbling away at a slab of peppermint bark instead of partying the night away?
Don’t despair. Festive fashion help is here! Yes, Virginia, there is a way you can look festive and stylish while being comfortable this season.
I’ve got five ways to give your casual outfits a holiday tweak.
1) Wear Sequins
Add some shine to your denim with sequins. A sequin top like this black one can amp up the festiveness of any look. I added a satin bow belt, tied at the side, and some pointy-toed pumps to dress it up even more. Look for sequin tops in secondhand shops. Just be sure that the sequins are intact or at least repairable. I found this top for just $5.00 in excellent condition a few years ago and wear it every holiday season.
A sequin jacket turns these white jeans, normally reserved for spring and summer, into an original and fresh-looking holiday outfit. Add some metallic accents like a shiny silver evening bag or chunky bejeweled ring for even more holiday glam.
2) Show Your Festive Colors
Red is the king of holiday colors: red sweaters, red coats, red hats, red shoes, red scarves. Wearing red instantly makes your look a little more spirited. Go bold with festive colors and try wearing red skinny pants.
If red is the king of holiday colors then green is the queen. I like to mix my green pants with winter white to soften it a bit. For more of an evening look, try pairing holiday green with black and adding a small pop of red with red lipstick and red nails.
3) Put on Your Party Shoes
You simply can’t go wrong putting the party on your feet. This is by far the easiest way to make your look festive and they make a great conversation starter.
Let your sparkly party shoes do the holiday work by wearing them with solid colors or neutral prints like this long brocade jacket.
Or wear your party shoes with a festive holiday color and basic black pants. So simple!
4) Wear a Dramatic Coat
Turn heads at your holiday party in an over-the-top coat. Big fur collars, animal prints, bright festive colors, even metallic coats or jackets will turn an ordinary jeans outfit into something extra memorable.
5) Bring on the Baubles!
These gorgeous statement earrings by Los Angeles area jewelry designer and blogger, Tamera Beardlsey, shout holiday glam and draw attention where you want it – to your face.
Enormous statement pearls remind me of small ornaments and look great with denim and a simple silky top.
If large pieces of jewelry aren’t your thing, try a holiday-themed necklace, brooch or pair of earrings with your favorite casual outfit for just a touch of holiday spirit.
Stockings, angels, holiday trees and snowflakes done up in pave, rhinestones, or genuine gems add holiday sparkle and let everyone know you’re in a festive mood. Take a look in antique shops for some great vintage holiday jewelry
