It is time to say farewell to summer, and, for many, dust of the textbooks for a new semester. Whether you are in the city or a picturesque East Coast Ivy League campus, heading back to campus in style for the fall is a must. I am excited to see that many designers are showing a simple and timeless aesthetic in their fall/winter collections. Many of these looks are reminiscent of vintage varsity style, however, they can be updated with modern pieces such as leather bombers and high top sneakers.
Key pieces for fall style include flannel shirts, tweeds & glen plaid, patterned sweaters, and great outerwear. This season, designers such as GANT and Polo by Ralph Lauren are offerings timeless fall essentials that exude Ivy League style. The GANT Fall/Winter 2014 Collection draws inspiration from a young couple that makes the transition from country to the city as fall approaches, thus the collection is filled with sharp, modern cuts on classic styles and school year staples such as chunky knits. Similarly, the fall offerings from Polo represent a modern, downtown twist on classic pieces. From rich sweaters to functional outerwear, the fall line from Polo is very strong this season. Chinos and sweaters topped with a vest or blazer is an easy option for class.
If the old school varsity style and inspiration is not your style, opt for a more modern look with a darker color palette and slim cuts from designers such as Maison Kitsuné. Their fall collection dubbed “London Beats” draws inspiration from the mod style of the 60s. Designer Tom Burke breathes new life into this inspiration with modern leather jackets paired with crisp button-downs and printed sweaters. Loafers complete this look. This is a great aesthetic for any city campus.
Your style does not have to be limited to the classroom walls and campus walkways. Translate your style into your dorm. Internationally renowned artist Zio Ziegler collaborated with PBteen to release a collection of pieces that will bring a modern edge to any dorm room. From bedding to wall art, each detailed piece is influenced by graffiti and is a stylish way to enter the new school year.
