Material Girl Collection by Madonna will hit Macy’s stores in August. When we talk about today’s fashion icons, there is nobody and nothing like Madonna. And there hasn’t been the last 30 years.
The 80’s look is trendy, and right on time, Madonna is launching her new affordable fashion line, Material Girl, at Macy’s. We are getting a sneak peak of the collection already now, and what I love we are also getting a cool social media campaign, being kicked off together with Madonna, Macy’s and Madonna’s daughter Lourdes, who just
launched a blog yesterday. Part of the launch campaign is also guessing who is the face of the Material Girl Collection, a celebrity face for the brand is a teen actress, whose name won’t be revealed until next month. There is also
text message sweepstakes to meet Madonna and Leon at a Sept. 22 event at Macy’s Herald Square in New York when the collection launches.
The Material Girl collection includes clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry and hair accessories, and what’s really to love about, it’s not high end at all, the prices range between $12 and $40, perfect pricing for your teenage or tween daughter, and for the rest of us who think we can pull off a little bit of the Material Girl look (at least the accessories!). There are some special items like a studded leather jacket and a crinoline dress with a built-in bustier retailing for up to $80, still very affordable.
You will be able to recognize many of the looks from Madonna’s past looks – and I mean
past looks. The jewelry in the collection is trendy with long mixed-media necklaces and bracelets in fake pearls and ribbons, but you can recognize the original Material Girl in the dangling multistrand metal chains with crosses and in the multiple bangles. The clothing follows and brings recognizable looks.
The leather jacket and striped top from the “Papa Don’t Preach”, lace skirts that remind us of the “Like a Virgin” and “Desperately Seeking Susan”. And not forgetting later looks, like bustier tops reminding of “Express Yourself” video and fitted plaid shirts of “Don’t Tell Me”. And to appeal more to today’s young fashionistas the collection also includes flower print dresses, cute blazers, tomboy cargo shorts, skinny jeans and well, of course, lots of leggings.
The shoes in the Material Girl Collection come as ballet flats in snake or floral prints – or boyish Oxfords and tough-girl combat boots.
Everything refreshened up for this millennium. Madonna teamed up with her teenage daughter Lourdes, nick named Lola, to appeal more to those who did not live the Material Girl’s first coming, and to really come up with a fresh look. The brand insists that 13-year-old Lola has been a big influencer in making the Material Girl Collection for today’s young Material Girls.
“She’s been coming to meetings pretty much from the very beginning,” said Madonna for WWD of her fashion-loving daughter.
“My role was really to make sure we were all going in the right direction and it was a line that I could stand behind and be proud of and feel good about — and one that she could also feel represented her. I really like the way Lola dresses, and I think this line is absolutely an extension of her taste.”
